Saturday is decision day on Newcastle’s bid for Grant Hanley

The situation surrounding Grant Hanley looks to be coming to a conclusion one way or another.

Newcastle have had two bids of £3.5m and £4.5m but both were rejected by Blackburn Rovers.

With some days passing since that second bid, the positions are now said to be entrenched.

At one end of the deal Newcastle are reported not to be willing to go any higher, whilst Blackburn won’t accept lower tha £6m plus a bonus payment if Newcastle are promoted.

Whilst there are reports in the north east media that Rafa Benitez has now walked away from the deal, that looks a little premature with clearly Grant Hanley his first choice to come in to compete with Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba.

Further claims that Rafa is now considering an offer for either Daniel Ayala or Tom Lees don’t convince at all, both players would cost more than the Blackburn defender and Middlesbrough & Sheffield Wednesday are in far stronger financial positions than the Lancashire club, plus of course the small matter of Boro being in the Premier League.

The Lancashire Telegraph say that their information is that Newcastle United definitely haven’t made a third offer, yet. However, they say that if Grant Hanley plays on Saturday in Blackburn’s friendly against Morecambe, that would be the final confirmation that the deal is dead.

The central defender was left out of last weekend’s friendly against SV Ried because of a claimed ‘injury’, though it was seen by most as a precaution with a deal imminent. With the player keen on the move a deal will surely be reached, if Rafa Benitez sees Grant Hanley as the ideal recruit in this window.
