After a week of training in County Kildare and 22 players contributing to a 6-0 win over Bohemian on Saturday, Rafa Benitez has declared ‘we know them a little bit better’ when talking about his squad.

Whilst the Newcastle boss has said he desperately needs to bring in another centre-back, he must have been pleased with what he saw in Dublin.

It may have been against low quality opposition (who had a league game on Friday night) but the way the players clicked on certain moves/goals will have pleased the Spaniard.

With goals shared amongst six different players, Rafa Benitez was happy to reap the benefits of the work in training, although he did say that despite the clean sheet there are still things to work on in defence.

Rafa picked Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle out for special mention and the movement & smart goals from the two new signings are surely a great pointer for the new season.

Rafa Benitez speaking to NUFC TV:

“After one week we could see a lot of positives, good things that we were practicing and also some mistakes…so we have to keep working and try to improve these things.

‘What pleased you in the game v Bohemian FC?’

“The goals, to see the team creating a lot of chances, the movement, we could see something from players that was expected and we know them a little bit better.

“It is not the same when you play to when you train.

“Have to improve little things in defence but in terms of attack the team was doing well.

Matt Ritchie is a good player and he can score this kind of goal (watch it here).

“So really pleased for him, for (Dwight) Gayle – scoring goals is always good for the confidence. He had very good movement and could maybe have had one or two more, so really pleased for him.

“It is very important for all of them to have minutes under their belts. Training was good and then seeing the team score goals – it has been a great week.”
