Newcastle United set to sign two defenders – Reports

Newcastle United are set to significantly strengthen their defence in the coming days.

Initial reports from Spain this morning of Newcastle interest in Jesus Gamez have quickly moved on, with widespread media coverage now claiming that the player will fly into Newcastle within the next 24 hours.

The Atletico Madrid defender who can play in either full-back position, is surplus to requirements with at the La Liga club now.

The 18m euros signing of Sime Vrsaljko. meaning that his principal role as cover for first choice Juanfran is no longer needed.

Indeed Atletico now have 37 senior players with only 25 squad places available, 31 year old Jesus Gamez spent his entire career at Malaga before being bought in by Atletico Madrid two years ago.

As well as Gamez, the Chronicle now say that their information is that his signing will quickly be followed by that of a centre-back.

In recent days Newcastle have been linked with a number of centre-backs, including Steven Caulker.

Since summer 2014, Newcastle have seen the departure of five senior defenders in Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Davide Santon, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini, with only Chancel Mbemba brought in during that period.
