Newcastle interested in former Sunderland striker – Reports
Newcastle United are interested in bringing in former Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy, according to reports today.
The Irish Sun claims that Rafa Benitez is thinking about bringing in yet another player proven in the Championship.
The Newcastle boss has already shown that strict age constraints are a thing of the past with 31 year old Jesuz Gamez arriving on a two year deal, so on age alone you couldn’t rule out Rafa thinking about 33 year old Daryl Murphy.
Able to play on both the wing and through the middle, Murphy’s versatility would also be an asset.
Brought over from Waterford United, Daryl Murphy had limited success in his four years on Wearside, although 10 of his 15 Sunderland goals came in the 2006/07 Championship season for them.
After a disappointing few years at Celtic, the striker/winger has really came into his own at Ipswich Town, over the course of the last three seasons Daryl Murphy has scored 50 goals (27 in 2014/15) in 117 Championship starts (+8 as sub).
Despite all six signings looking potential positives for Newcastle United, you still feel that more goals are needed in the team, though whether that will be 33 year old Daryl Murphy remains to be seen.
Daryl Murphy has also benefitted on the international scene due to his Chhampionship form, the Ipswich player playing against both France and Italy for Ireland at this summer’s Euros.
