Aleksandar Mitrovic looked in good shape on Saturday, earning and scoring a penalty to put Newcastle 2-0 up against Bohemian FC.
The striker was back at training the same time as the rest of the squad despite having had the option of extra time off, due to international duty after the end of the season.
The Serbian striker scored against both Cyprus and Russia in those end of season friendlies, carrying on his last match of the season form when he scored a great goal against Tottenham.
Even before he came back for pre-season training, Mitrovic posted a picture on social media of both his partner and young son wearing Newcastle United kit, a player who certainly didn’t look to be planning an escape after relegation…unlike certain others.
Over in Dublin on Saturday, Newcastle fans were concerned when just before half-time the striker signalled that he had to come off and hobbled off the pitch.
However, Rafa Benitez has calmed those concerns by confirming:
“It was a knock on his ankle and nothing serious.”
It remains to be seen whether Mitrovic plays any part on Wednesday night when Newcastle travel to Doncaster for their second friendly of five.
However, fans will have to wait anyway once the season kicks off, to see whether the potentially exciting partnership of Mitrovic and Gayle can live up to our hopes.
Mitrovic misses the first four matches after his daft sending off against Spurs and subsequent suspension.
