Liverpool fans react to £25m Wijnaldum transfer confirmation – Interesting

A deal has finally been agreed, Gini Wijnaldum will move to Anfield for £25m but what do Liverpool fans make of it?

With the potential transfer dragging on for some time, both Newcastle and Liverpool fans have had time to form an opinion on the midfielder and who is getting the better deal.

Fair to say that Newcastle supporters are pretty split, with people either praising Wijnaldum for what he does do (11 goals and 5 assists last season), or alternatively what he doesn’t do (not a lot else apart from scoring 11 goals and making another 5…).

Looking at the comments by Liverpool fans below, I can’t help but feel that they have been influenced to a large extent by what Newcastle supporters have said about the midfielder, rather than what they have seen with their own eyes.

A lot of negativity about the transfer, although there are those who think he will be a big asset.

Much of it boils down to what represents good value in the transfer market this summer, with Premier League clubs having over £600m extra TV money between them each year, starting this season.

Comments taken from top Liverpool fans website This is Anfield:

‘There is plenty of reason to complain. We have spent 60m between Mane and Georginio… We could’ve signed a world class player for that money and wages combined.’

‘I think you’re living in the transfer market of 2008…’

‘I know very little about this guy but judging by what I am seeing on other forums there is serious discontent with this signing. The general complaint is that he has an attitude problem, constantly goes missing in games, he’s a “match of the day player”, he won’t track back, he doesn’t work hard enough, we didn’t do our due diligence on this player etc etc. Hopefully Jurgen has got it very right and will prove the doubters very wrong.’

‘And we get ripped off again.’

‘Given the market and the money involved it’s about the going rate for players. Consider Joe Allen going for £13m and he’s in his final year of contract.’

‘NUFC got a little bit of extra money, big deal…at 20mil he’d be a quality signing. Our rejects and castaways are making us plenty of money as is.’

I’m not saying Wijnaldum is a bad player but I just don’t think he is worth 25 million. So yes I think we over payed aka got ripped off.’

‘There’s nothing like a new signing to trigger a tidal wave of negativity…’

‘Why are people complaining about the price? Is it not already apparent how inflated the market is now with the TV deal? We sold Ibe for £15m for goodness sake!!’

‘This is nightmare.. FSG wants to sell coutinho and bring in some players from relegated team. He doesnt contribute anything in defensively.’

‘Wijnaldum can play LM, and no way that price tag will make him just a cover for couts.’

‘I like the look of Wijnaldum, think he will be a good signing. Not impressed with the price tag though.’

‘WHAT AN ABSOLUTE JOKE! THIS IS A DISGRACE! Bang average signings for big money…. what has liverpool come to.’

‘The fee is mental, also I don’t understand this signing, Sissoko would’ve made more sense.’

‘Nooooooo. Sissoko only started playing well once he wanted his move. Plus he wants to play for the “beautiful Arsenal”. One of the laziest players out there.’

‘Georginio Wijnaldum is a quality player. Welcome Wijnaldum.’

‘Great business! I hope he will do well. He has good link up play in him, and his individual attributes and consistency (of scoring 10+ goals per season) will benefit us. I cant wait for premier league this season..just so excited.’

‘Alright , he’s good quality player , but where does he fit in ? He is a central attacking midfielder – pace, balance, dribbling, vision – its all there, but 25 mill for the bench?’

‘Wijnaldum I think will be playing the games we expect to have possession then Hendo and Can will be playing games where we will do a lot of chasing , eg man city, man utd, chelsea and arsenal.’
