With the exit/entry door continuing to swing at St James Park, Arsenal’s Isaac Hayden is set to be United’s fifth signing of the season.

All but the official announcement appears to be missing, after the player was seen at Newcastle’s training ground before the squad flew off to Ireland for their week-long training camp.

Sky Sports are reporting that Hayden is coming on a five year contract and the player has taken his medical.

As a young player at Arsenal, Isaac Hayden was predominantly a central defender who could also play as a defensive midfielder, or as a full-back.

However, at Hull City last year when on loan, he was used regularly in central midfield and that is what Newcastle are reported to have brought him in as, a defensive midfielder rather than centre-back.

Although with only two specialist centre-backs at the moment (Lascelles and Mbemba) and a second bid for Blackburn’s Grant Hanley turned down, it will be a bonus that Hayden can also fill in at the centre of defence.

Hull City went up through the play-offs last season and the young defender played 18 times in the Championship, plus six times in the cups, however, only nine of those Championship appearances were in the starting 11.

Hayden has made a couple of appearances in the League Cup for Arsenal and made the bench for both Premier League and Champions League matches, without actually getting any game time.

So time to move on and at Newcastle hopefully he can prove to be one that Arsene Wenger let get away.
