Arsenal defender set to be Rafa’s fifth Newcastle signing after medical

Newcastle United are set to make Isaac Hayden their fifth signing of the summer.

The Arsenal defender is now on Tyneside for his medical according to the Shields Gazette, though no news as yet of whether the proposed deal is on loan or permanent.

The 21 year old central defender is still to make his Premier League debut for Arsenal but has played a couple of League Cup matches for the Gunners.

Like numerous other players at the Emirates, Isaac Hayden was sent out on loan last season and helped Hull City win promotion.

The young defender played 18 times in the Championship, plus six times in the cups.

However, only nine of those Championship appearances were in the starting 11, suggesting he was brought in more as back-up for Hull’s first choice defence.

If it was a loan deal, it is likely Arsene Wenger would look for some guarantees of regular football before agreeing to another temporary move.

With Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor leaving, plus Coloccini heading back to Argentina, Newcastle are in need of at least one new signing at centre-half.

Jesus Gamez signed on Friday from Atletico Madrid, meaning that if Isaac Hayden also signs, Rafa Benitez will have five additions taking part in pre-season training this coming week in County Kildare.

***The Shields Gazette have now reported that the deal is set to be a permanent one.
