York City confirm friendly match against a Newcastle United XI

York City have announced that a Newcastle United XI are to visit Bootham Crescent for a friendly match on Saturday 30 July 2016, almost a year to the day (Wed 29 July 2015) when York beat a strong NUFC side.

The result that night was 2-1 with Ayoze Perez grabbing the consolation goal with a quarter of an hour remaining, United having gone 2-0 down in the opening 20 minutes.

All eyes though were on Aleksandar Mitrovic, the Serbian making his friendly debut after moving from Anderlecht.

The crowd that night was 5,406 with 2,046 travelling Newcastle supporters.

The line-up being:

Darlow, Bigirimana, Satka, Lascelles, Ferguson, Abeid, Gouffran, Aarons, De Jong, Perez, Mitrovic

Saturday 30 July is one week before the Championship kicks off and there have been claims in Holland that Vitesse Arnhem will play a friendly at St James Park that day.

The Newcastle United official website says that it will be a young team selected by Peter Beardsley rather than a Rafa Benitez first team, though maybe they haven’t told York City as they are charging the same prices (£12 for an adult) as a year ago, when Mitrovic, Perez, de Jong and others played.

Official York City announcement:

‘Newcastle United to visit Bootham Crescent in late July…

YORK City can announce that a Newcastle United XI will visit Bootham Crescent for a pre-season friendly on Saturday, 30th July.

The fixture against the recently relegated Premier League club will kick off at 3.00pm.

It will be the second consecutive pre-season that the Magpies have swooped into Bootham Crescent after the Minstermen recorded a 2-1 victory last July courtesy of strikes from Anthony Straker and Reece Thompson.

Tickets for this game are priced at £12.00 adults and £6.00 concessions.’
