It’s obvious not many England fans also follow Newcastle

The only thing funnier than England’s dull as dishwater performance against 10 man Portugal, was the hysteria that followed it from the England fans and embarrassing media we have in this country.

Apparently everything is a disgrace: team selection, tactics, squad selection, formation etc etc.

Remember, England won 10 out of 10 matches in their Euros qualifying group, have won five of their last six friendly games that have followed that, including beating Germany away and a win over France – a team who have won the other nine of their last 10 games.

Safe to say, not many England fans are also Newcastle supporters.

The level of expectancy is always ramped up by the English media before any tournament and this one had been especially bad – until recent days/weeks, coming to a climax after the poor and boring 1-0 win over Portugal last Thursday.

If you look at the players Roy Hodgson has available, it is difficult to see where England fans get so upset.

Of the 16 players who got on the pitch against Portugal, only one came from the champions – and Vardy had to play out of position because Kane was through the middle. However, four of the 16 players came from Liverpool, this is Liverpool who finished eighth in the Premier League.

(England 11 v Portugal: Hart, Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Rose, Milner, Dier, Alli, Kane, Rooney, Vardy

Subs used: Sterling, Lallana, Sturridge, Henderson, Wilshere)

On top of this, England have to rely on the weakest defence they have probably ever had, whilst elsewhere you have Hodgson feeling he has to rely on players such as Sterling who can’t get in his club team and injury plagued players such as Wilshere, who isn’t even that good anyway.

The big hope for England fans appears to be that the ‘backbone’ of the team can be made up of four or more young Tottenham players, yes they did well last season but a 7-2 aggregate for a dismal Newcastle over Spurs last season shows just how fragile they can be.

As for superstars left behind…it isn’t exactly as though Roy Hodgson has forgotten that Messi, Neymar and Suarez qualify for England is it?

Personally, I would have included both Townsend and Carroll because they could be possibly impact subs who offered something different but I don’t think Roy Hodgson is stupid for not including them.

Deluded is a word that appears to follow Newcastle fans around but it England fans who need to calm down, at least those who don’t also follow the Magpies.
