A Newcastle United 11 will take part in this summer’s Steel Park Cup, hosted by Corby Town.

Corby are based in Northamptonshire and play in the Evo-Stik League South.

Newcastle United will face Corby on Saturday 23 July at 3.30pm, then on Sunday 24 July will play against PSV Eindhoven at 12 noon the following day. No news as yet of which Newcastle players will or won’t be included but you would imagine it won’t include former PSV Captain Gini Wijnaldum…

Having said that, the competition has attracted a number of high profile players in the past, with the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Emre Can competing for Liverpool last season.

The cup will take place in a league format, with each side playing once per day. Teams will be awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw. Goal difference will be the deciding factor if two sides are level at the end of the weekend.

The winning team will be then presented with the Steel Park Cup after the final match on Sunday, PSV hoping to retain a trophy they won last summer.

Tickets for the Steel Park Cup can be bought here..

One ticket gives access to both matches on a selected day for £15, or a weekend ticket is available for £25 and covers all four games.

Only two weeks before the Championship kicks off, it will be interesting to see how Rafa Benitez uses this Corby tournament to prepare some, if any, of his first team squad. Saturday 23 July is also the date, according to various media sources, when Newcastle are set to play a friendly in Belgium against Sporting Lokeren.

The Steel Park Cup 2016 match schedule:

3.30pm – Corby Town v Newcastle United XI

Sunday 24 July

12pm – Newcastle United XI v PSV Eindhoven XI
