Recent days have seen claims that AS Roma and Napoli are competing to sign Gini Wijnaldum this summer.

Both clubs finished top three in Serie A last season and can offer Champions League football, whilst Wijnaldum himself has been evasive when asked where he will be next season.

However, Italian media have today claimed that AS Roma have firmed up their interest and approached Newcastle United to find out what kind of fee they would be looking for.

Sky Italia report that the figure Roma have been quoted for Gini Wijnaldum is a hefty £30m.

All the noises from Newcastle have been that if players are to leave then they won’t come cheap and this alleged price tag certainly isn’t that (cheap).

Whilst many Newcastle fans see the former PSV Captain as a player who was anonymous for so much of last season, there are the stats that show in his first season in the Premier League, Wijnaldum scored 11 goals from midfield and also claimed five PL assists.

Those are impressive stats and achieved in a poor Newcastle team, so there is an argument to say that with this year’s experience and playing in a better side, he could improve on that goals/assist contribution.

Arriving for just short of £15m last summer, does it equate to him doubling in value? AS Roma reportedly don’t think so, wit Sky Italia saying that they are prepared to wait and see if a more realistic valuation comes about in the coming weeks.

Well with the new Premier League TV deal potentially pumping in some extra £600m into the transfer market, who knows what crazy prices will be seen in the coming weeks and months.

The midfielder has also been doing his best to put himself in the shop window, with four goals in his last four games over the course of the last month. Scoring twice against Spurs and then for Holland in their friendlies against Poland and Austria.
