Napoli interest in Gini Wijnaldum – Reports

Napoli are considering a move for Gini Wijnaldum according to media claims in Italy today.

Sky Italia report that the Serie A club are looking at the Newcastle midfielder as an alternative, if they can’t land Piotr Zielinski.

Zielinski is with Poland at the Euros but is in big demand, with Liverpool one of the clubs who are said to be chasing the 22 year old midfielder.

He is a Udinese player but has been on loan and impressed at Empoli over the course of the past two years.

As for Wijnaldum, both Southampton and Everton were reported as being interested in the player but any genuine interest from either club, is currently complicated by the fact that the situation is still ongoing as to Manager Ronald Koeman moving between the two.

As for the player himself, over the course of a number of post-season interviews he has avoided the question of whether or not he intends to stay at Newcastle or look elsewhere. Drawing much derision when in one of these interviews, Wijnaldum claimed to be too traumatised by relegation to even think at the moment about what he wants to do.

As for Rafa’s former club Napoli, they finished runners-up to Juventus and so can offer the former PSV Captain the carrot of Champions League football, something he missed out on last season – spending a season being relegated with Newcastle, as his former team-mates got through to the CL knockout stages under the captaincy of former NUFC loan player Luuk de Jong.
