Over in Portugal, Sporting Lisbon have made it known that Aleksandar Mitrovic would be their dream signing this summer.
Finishing two points behind big rivals Benfica (13 points ahead of third placed Porto), Sporting are desperate to try and bridge that gap to be Champions.
Manager Jorge Jesus must have been pleased with runners up spot and Champions League qualification in the first year of his three season contract but he is the driving force behind Sporting Lisbon’s claimed desire to land Mitrovic.
The Sporting Lisbon link with Mitrovic has created headlines in Portugal and Sports newspaper Record report, that Sporting believe their best chance of funding such a move would be by using their Algerian striker Islam Slimani (27 goals in 33 league games last season) as a makeweight in any deal, or by selling him to help fund a transfer fee and wages for the Newcastle striker.
However, for any deal to happen, it would mean Sporting having to make Aleksandar Mitrovic their top wage earner by a long long way, plus a far higher transfer fee than they would be comfortable with.
Undeterred by these factors, Record contacted Mitrovic directly and asked him about the Sporting Lisbon interest.
“I have got four more years of my Newcastle deal and I have not received any official approach.
“I am very happy in England but it is always good when you see your name linked to a club like Sporting – a big club.
“If something did come up, then they (Sporting or whoever) would have to talk with Newcastle first, then only then with myself and my agent.”
