It is so appropriate that Ant and Dec have been honoured at the same time as Alan Shearer.
The trio all recognised in the Queen’s Honours Birthday list that was revealed late on Friday night, Shearer receiving a CBE & Ant and Dec OBEs.
So many of us take the three of them for granted, the way they represent Newcastle Upon Tyne and the wider north east in the best possible way.
All three working tirelessly for charity but more than that, the pleasure they have all given millions of people.
Ant and Dec are the ultimate professionals and the biggest TV stars in the UK year after year, yet carry it off without a hint of arrogance.
Alan Shearer has now established himself as a very decent pundit after a shaky start but obviously that pales into insignificance for Newcastle fans, after the sacrifices he made to stay at Newcastle United and the pleasure he gave us in those 10 years as a player.
A massive bonus is the way that he speaks out as a Newcastle fan, always ready to defend our corner against the background noise of idiots such as Paul Merson, Ian Wright and countless others.
Thanks for everything and you are a credit to Tyneside.
After the news was revealed, Alan Shearer told BBC Sport:
“It’s been hard work keeping it quiet from the rest of my family and friends, but it’s a great time and I’m absolutely delighted. It’s been so surprising.
“It’s not just myself, it’s a lot of hard work that goes on with my particular charity, the Alan Shearer Centre in Newcastle, a lot of it has been for that so I’m absolutely delighted.
“I had to give something back, I think that was very important. Footballers get a lot of criticism nowadays for not giving enough back. I had my testimonial in 2006 and gave that money away to set up my foundation, and it’s gone on from strength to strength.”
