What Sunderland fans have said after Rafa Benitez staying at Newcastle news – Classic!
Newcastle fans have met today’s Rafa Benitez news with a mixture of relief and celebration but what about the Sunderland fans?
Wednesday morning saw widespread confirmation in the media that Mike Ashley had satisfied Rafa Benitez’ demands after relegation, with the former Real Madrid manager happy at the level of control he will have and the transfer funds he’s been promised to help get the job done.
An official announcement by the club is expected very soon.
Newcastle fans are pretty much bemused that Mike Ashley appointed a clown like Steve McClaren to manage in the Premier League, yet the club is still seen attractive enough for somebody of the calibre of Rafa Benitez to manage NUFC in the Championship,
With each passing day going by without confirmation, Newcastle supporters were edgy due to past experiences. which showed that under Ashley it didn’t pay to get your hopes up.
With names such as Neil Warnock being floated to scare the population of Tyneside, the mackems must have been hoping against hope that Rafa wouldn’t stay.
We searched out the reaction of the Sunderland fans after today’s Rafa Benitez news, via one of their top message boards Ready To Go:
‘The Hysteria? It’s laughable man.’
‘They are clinging to the Rafa Benitez factor to handle relegation. It’s ridiculous.’
‘BSA is on far less. My point is, people saying he is there because he loves the club and it has huge potential is a load of sh*t. I think the top 4 mangers are only on more than Rafa. That is why he is staying.’
‘Whilst it wasn’t a straightforward job, Benitez clearly didn’t do a great job. I think the Newcastle will get promoted due to the extreme lack of quality in the Championship. If I was a Newcastle fan I’d probably want the guy but I don’t get why there is this reverence about Benitez and the desire to have a ‘world class’ manager.’
‘Give it until Christmas when the mags are sitting in the bottom half of the championship, all 52,000 will be calling for his head with their Rafa out banners.’
‘He improved them, considerably, and despite those poor results their fans can see that. And because he’s a thousand times better than any other manager they’re likely to get.’
‘You were one of the shi**est 3 teams in the division and got RELEGATED, you do understand that? You are not in the Champions League and won’t be for a long time.’
‘Clearly a top manager to have and to get him to stay at that level is something of a coup. He definitely improved them last season and is way above anybody else they are likely to attract.
However the level of optimism/expectation seems absolutely ridiculous I have spoken to a few who are usually fairly reasonable and they are talking about being top 8 in 3 seasons. It’s barmy and no idea what it’s based on.’
‘Rattled ? F*** off man.’
‘I’m not blaming him solely for the whole season. I’m saying he had a very realistic opportunity to keep them up when he took over, and was a failure. Ergo I fail to see what the hysteria about him staying is about.’
‘Can’t wait to see the vomit inducing headline on the Chronicle.’
‘Who has said it’s a joke appointment? Coup to get him in the first place, bigger coup to keep him after relegation. Ashley has played a blinder here, I bet their fans aren’t grateful in the slightest though. I just hope it all goes wrong, it might very well. It seems many of them now think they’re guaranteed European football within 2 years.’
‘They can pretend to be happy all they want but it’ll be killing them being in our shadow again.’
‘It’s the summer, there is nothing else to do but sit on the boundary edge in the sunshine or poke fun at the Mags. I might get bored by November….might.’
‘Never has abject failure been more openly celebrated, it’s like some sort of mass hypnosis.’
‘I keep on hearing he’s a world class manager. Now do World Class managers drop down to the championship you thick ****?’
‘Just wait until the fixture lists come out that’ll bring the daft ***** down with a bang LOL. Never seen a set of fans been so upbeat after being relegated.’
‘Rivalry aside, as a personal note to Benitez, if he fails with the mags now his career is pretty much finished.’
‘This, incredible…They have outclassed all other football fans with this new level of delusion. I’ve seen predictions of 2 or 3 trophies in next few years, champions league football – they have just been RELEGATED ffs and the bloke they are celebrating over was in charge!!!!
Looking forward to the inevitable meltdown given the ridiculous and mammoth weight of expectations – next season is seen as something to get out of the way before moving on to regaining their “rightful place” in the very top echelons of European football. If they aren’t immediately top of league, who will they blame??????’
‘I’m not celebrating this news. I’d rather have had Neil Warnock with no budget than Benitez with a “wor chest“.
Still, we have at least a season to establish ourselves properly again in the premier league and hopefully more strongly in the region, it’s up to us to make the most of it.’
‘Hate NUFC 1st, Love SAFC 2nd… its always been the case #FTM’
‘There’s been more posts about the mags and their plight than us and ours since the Everton game.
All we are doing is showing the mags that they are our be all and end all.’
