After failing to score a goal or beat Aston Villa, Rafa Benitez says that all Newcastle can do now is ‘wait’.
If Sunderland beat Everton on Wednesday night then it is all over, if they draw or get beat then Newcastle have to beat Spurs on the final day to stand a chance of surviving.
When Sunderland were twice behind, it felt like all we needed was a Newcastle goal to make United big favourites to finish fourth bottom.
The reality was that it never looked like happening.
Rafa Benitez felt that Newcastle were anxious and uncomfortable in possession in the first half, then improved in the second – however any improvement was only marginal.
A couple of average shots saved and a hanging Mitrovic header drifting wide – if that is the best you can do against a rotten side like Aston Villa then you deserve to go down.
“We are disappointed, not just because we couldn’t get the three points but also Sunderland won, so all we can do now is wait for the score of their game on Wednesday and try to win our game.
“We were a little bit anxious in the first half. We were not comfortable in possession.
“You have to take your chances and we didn’t do that.
“We had to change things in the second half. We did that, but it was not enough..
“We had some good chances but you have to take them at this level – we didn’t do it.
“You cannot change things now, you just analyse what you have done and then wait (for Sunderland v Everton result on Wednesday), then off you go to the next match with chances – make sure you win.”
