News from France today that Newcastle United have been watching Raphael Guerreiro ahead of a potential summer move to Tyneside.
The 22 year old already has a handful of caps for the Portuguese senior team and is set to leave Lorient in the summer.
The versatile left-back can also play further up the pitch and has 10 goals for the lowly French team over the course of the last two seasons (59 starts in Ligue 1 in that time).
The ambitious and rapidly developing player has seen his club side at last make sure of safety, though at only two places above the relegation zone it reflects their struggles this campaign.
France Football say that with only a year left on his contract, it looks certain that Lorient will look to sell Raphael Guerreiro this summer to maximise their return on a star player who cost just under £2m as a 19 year old three years ago.
Liverpool are also named as one of the clubs who are taking a watching brief but any move to Anfield would see his way blocked by current first choice Moreno.
That would of course not be the case at Newcastle where the need for a real quality left-back has been the case for some time, Paul Dummett does his best but is surely only a squad player if United stay up and want to progress.
There will be even more scepticism when it comes to transfer speculation at the minute, with Newcastle’s future far from certain.
However, players will be still being identified and watched in the event of United staying up, rather than moving from a standing start once we reach decision day on 15 May.
Just so long as Rafa Benitez will be selecting transfers, whichever division we end up in, the vast majority of fans will be happy.
Elsewhere, Hatem Ben Arfa is now credited with 18 different named clubs interested in taking the former Newcastle player when he falls out of contract this summer.
