Newcastle players asked to sign contract clause as proof of loyalty to club next season
As well as the minute by minute coverage of Rafa Benitez possibly/probably/definitely staying at St James Park, the last few days have seen an intensive parade of Newcastle players all pledging their allegiance to Newcastle next season.
Well when I say ‘pledging their allegiance’…that is what we are told anyway.
In reality, what we see is player after player interviewed and saying exactly the same few things in response no doubt to exactly the same questions posed by club staff and then passed on to the newspapers.
They pretty much all say:
If only had played for rest of season like did against Tottenham.
Apologise for the results not being better.
Promise to do better next season.
Really feel sorry for the Newcastle supporters.
We all know it is nonsense, past Newcastle history – particularly the last relegation in 2009, tells us so, plus what we see happening or has happened at other clubs.
At this stage, long before the transfer window actually opens, they are hardly going to say anything else.
What is needed is the following, in my opinion.
I will have some recovering respect for the Newcastle players who sign the following, make it irrevocable and get it inserted as a contract clause:
Dear Mike Ashley,
I would like to apologise to every single Newcastle fan and club employee for what has happened in the 2015/16 football season.
Along with the rest of my team-mates, my contribution to the Newcastle United cause was woeful and it is my fault, along with the rest of them, why the club have been relegated.
Steve McClaren and his staff may have been clueless and you yourself bear much of the blame as well BUT as one of the players, I am only interested now in what I can do to be part of putting things right.
I hereby refuse to consider any transfer to any club that might show interest in signing me this summer, even if you would like me to leave and bank the money I will refuse any offer or pressure to go.
I guarantee that I will spend as an absolute minimum, the full 2016/17 season trying to get Newcastle United back into the Premier League.
As a sign of good faith and to show that I am genuine in accepting my part in last season’s failure, despite having no relegation clause that leads to a drop in pay….
I wish you to send half of everything I earn in the next year (1 July 2016 – 30 June 2017 inclusive) to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation/Alan Shearer Foundation/Insert other charity here……..
By this I hope to show my commitment to both the football club and the wider community of the north east, rather than just empty words and jumping ship once the first half-decent offer comes in.
