Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0  Saturday 7 May 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Nat Seaton:

“Failed to beat a team home or away (when a win today was a MUST) who have managed just 17 points all season.

“The main damage was done pre-March but today produced a serious reality check in the fact that we are simply not good enough to get the job done, never mind relying on what happens elsewhere.

“Would love to think something to still play for next Sunday but I doubt that will be the case.”

Notts Toon

“Game over….”

Paul Lyon:

Pitiful really, that performance sums up our charges in black & white. When passes should have been played forwards they were either square or backwards.

“Had our chances but simply not good enough for a team ‘fighting’ for survival.

“Praying for miracles now, and they do happen from time to time…”

James Rutherford:

“Relegation as good as confirmed.

“If only Rafa had arrived sooner…”

Leazes Park Ender:

“We’ve been waiting to see how this might turn out, but one scenario that I never guessed was being unable to score against that Villa side.

“We need snookers now. We are all but relegated to the second tier of English football.

It was a great effort by the players to claw their way out of the bottom three but ultimately it has eluded them.

“We now wait our final fate before the summer upheaval begins.

“It’s been a long and bruising season.

“Today is a black day for everyone connected with Newcastle United Football Club.”

Jamie Swan

““Blew our big chance. A black day at hanging rock.

“Frustrated, annoyed, gutted. Out of our grasp. Possibly.

“Got to hope the Mackems lose at least one or both and we beat Spurs…

“That’s not even thinking about Norwich as the connotations are too much for my brain right now.

“Bastards man.”

George Stainsby:

“Not looking good.

“And to think we’d have been stunned with a 5 match run like this earlier in season… but if you don’t beat the worst team of all, you’re in bother.”
