Tottenham are claimed to be interested in one Newcastle player, in a tale that doesn’t quite add up.

The North London club reported to be considering a bid for Florian Thauvin in the summer.

Over in France, Le10Sport say that along with Valencia, Lazio and Inter Milan, Tottenham are keeping an eye on the winger who is currently on loan with Marseille.

It would make more sense if Tottenham were interested in Andros Townsend…who has done wonders for Newcastle since being sent on his way by Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side is built on a real hard work culture and strong versatile midfield players, where exactly a lightweight like Florian Thauvin is supposed to fit in is anybody’s guess.

You do wonder what will happen with Thauvin regardless of which division Newcastle end up in, the harsh reality of the Championship and playing at Rotherham on a Tuesday night in January would hardly seem to be a likely ideal scenario for the player, any more than the Premier League appeared to suit.

Florian Thauvin has even struggled to hold down a place at loan club Marseille who have just survived a near relegation, the Newcastle player has had a few more starts recently but it is still only seven first elevens and two goals in Ligue 1 since arriving in January. This puts him on a similar level to Sunderland reject Steven Fletcher who has seven Ligue 1 starts and one goal.

Florian Thauvin’s £14m move to Newcastle is for many fans surely the transfer that will end Graham Carr’s run of having the biggest influence on who arrives at the club, whether or not Rafa Benitez commits long-term.

Difficult to see United managing to sell Thauvin considering the wages he is on compared to what he has actually achieved so far, never mind whatever expectation Mike Ashley will have in terms of getting some of that £14m back.

The most likely outcome must be that next season will see another loan deal to a French club with Newcastle subsidising the wages to a significant extent.
