What Southampton fans said after Newcastle match – Uncomfortable viewing…

As always, interested in what the opposition supporters made of the match on Saturday afternoon – no matter how painful… so sought out the views of Southampton fans.

The overwhelming theme is sadly, disbelief  at just how bad Newcastle were.

The consensus also that Southampton could and should have won by far more and didn’t actually play very well despite the win.

Some barbed comments taking pleasure in Newcastle’s demise but the majority who expressed an opinion tending to be sympathetic.

Not sure which is worse – slagged off or being patronised?!!!

We searched out the reaction of the Southampton fans after the match, via the SaintsWeb message board:

‘A strangely disappointing win!!’

‘I have to disagree – no win is disappointing. It would have been nice to see a couple more goals, but JRod got a risk-free run out and we scored 3 goals.’

‘Good 1st half. Apart from Long we look pretty average up front. 2nd half was poor but no need to go all out to win when they (Newcastle) are that bad.

A good win without having to play that well – they are utterly terrible and are going down.’

‘Wijnaldum completely invisible this game. Would still want him for next season though.’

‘As for Newcastle, a terrible defence with Shelvey completely anonymous in the holding role. Amazing watching the difference in a Shelvey who scored a cracker against us for Swansea last year and this disinterested player.

Part of me doesn’t want Newcastle to go down because we have such an excellent record against them.’

‘Weird game, thought we were pretty poor yet we won without really getting into second gear. Newcastle’s defence is hilarious.’

We played really well first half, aided by a woeful Newcastle and especially Steven Taylor who was as bad as Mike Williamson the last couple of years.

‘Weren’t at our best today, especially after Long went off, but we really didn’t need to be. Think Newcastle are the worst team I’ve seen at St Marys this season.’

‘Newcastle are utterly 1 star. The worst team I’ve seen this year bar Villa who I think are the worst team I have ever seen in the prem.’

‘Newcastle were embarrassing. Mane MOTM.’

‘Took my son for his first match, great result, son loved it.

Newcastle were poor and we should have got more out if it but at 2-0 the game was won. Townsend’s goal was well taken although I’m puzzled as to why he was allowed that much space to get inside. All credit to the Newcastle fans who travelled, it can’t be nice to see your team play badly away or home.

My son wants to go again so doubled result for me today’

‘As easy a win as you’ll see. They were desperately poor, we just had to turn up to get the 3 points.’

‘I used to really rate this guy (Shelvey), especially at Swansea. What’s happened to him. I was almost expecting him to hammer one in from 30 yds. i almost feel sorry for him. But then I thought who in their right mind would go to Tyneside so serve the b*stard right.’

‘A couple of Swansea fans I know said they wanted him out of there due to his attitude and strops. After Shelvey was featured on MOTD for a couple of his early games for Newcastle he seemed to have settled in with a renewed attitude, although it’s always a question how long a player like that can stay focused. Just surprising he’s looking so pi**ed off so soon at a new club.’

‘Sunderland and Villa were both quite a lot better. I feel sorry for the Toon having to travel 350 miles to watch that ****e.’

‘It was a strange game really, I didn’t think we played particularly well after we went ahead early on. Newcastle were pretty abysmal though, the way that team has been built is a joke. They have no one who can defend in that team at all.’

‘I wonder if their fans regret hounding Pardew out.’

‘Why would they? After a strong start he has yet again reverted to type and produced a string of poor results at Palace. Whilst they are higher than Newcastle, it is hardly the kind of form or results to pine for is it?’

‘I bet they would snap someone’s hands and feet off for a 14th place finish (or whatever) now though. Newcastle fans are very deluded.’

‘Newcastle looked like a side accepting of their fate until Townsend scored and, even then, didn’t really put us any consistent pressure. They do have some decent players in that side but the defence is woeful. Whilst relegation is devastating for a club’s fans (& on occasion bank balance!), I do wonder whether the better players (or those with over inflated egos) see it as a stepping stone to a move elsewhere with a signing on fee pay day.’

‘I watched my first Saints v. Newcastle fixture over 50 years ago. These fixtures have always been entertaining and although we hadn’t played them so regularly over the years, I always regarded Newcastle as worthy opponents and their fan base – even when they were in a lower division – has always been very loyal.

What I saw yesterday was a very poor side, which bore little resemblance to the good Newcastle teams they’ve had in the past.

Given a choice, I hope they can survive, they deserve at least one more chance, the other 3 are really not Prem. Material. It would really cause an upset in the North East, if both Newcastle and Sunderland went down and Middlesboro’ were promoted.’
