Robbie Savage on Newcastle’s survival chances and beyond
Robbie Savage believes that Newcastle are already ‘gone’ but that might not be the end of it…
The player turned pundit compares the current Newcastle squad to the one that went down in 2009 and questions whether they will cope with the Championship.
Lumping United in with Aston Villa, which isn’t a good sign, Robbie Savage doubts whether the current players could get either team ‘straight back up’.
Savage says that Newcastle looked a lot better in Rafa Benitez’ first game when they restricted Leicester to a single shot on goal but after watching the feeble efforts for much of Saturday’s match at Norwich, he says ‘they were all over the place’.
No matter how much you might dislike Robbie Savage, it is hard to disagree with him after Saturday at Carrow Road – the defending especially was absolutely horrific and all three goals could have been prevented.
Plus, until Aleksandar Mitrovic was introduced with less than half an hour to go, it was difficult to see how Newcastle were going to create chances.
Robbie Savage speaking on Radio 5 Live:
“Remember when Newcastle went down last time and they had some really good professionals, who were suited to the Championship.
“I look at these Aston Villa and Newcastle squads now and are these players going to get their club straight back up?”
“Newcastle looked organised in Rafa Benitez’s first game at Leicester but today (v Norwich) they were all over the place.
“They are gone, they’re going down….
“The concern is after equalising the first time they conceded, then the same thing happened again. Surely at this point of the season, you see games out.”
