Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang smashes Papiss Cisse record
Whilst Papiss Cisse was toiling at Norwich this past weekend, one-time Newcastle target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was helping himself to his 36th goal of the season.
The Gabon striker has scored 36 in 41 matches in all competitions and now 23 goals in 26 Bundesliga games this campaign, second only to Bayern’s Lewandowski.
Bayern five points clear of Aubameyang and Dortmund, with then a massive 19 points to third placed Hertha Berlin.
Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 3-2 at the weekend and when Aubameyang scored, his 23rd league goal of the season, it broke Papiss Cisse’s record.
The Newcastle striker scored 22 times for Freiburg in the Bundesliga 2010/11 season and broke the longstanding record of Tony Yeboah (later to play for Leeds) in the early 1990s, becomimg the top African goalscorer in a season in the German top division.
Aubameyang now holds that title and with six league games still remaining, is set to put some further distance between himself and Cisse’s previous record.
