Norwich 3 Newcastle 2 – Instant fan/writer reaction
Norwich 3 Newcastle 2 Saturday 2 April 3pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:
“The highs and lows (and lows and lows) of following Newcastle United.
“Back for more next week but not sure I can take much more of this…”
“It’s over, surely.
“Today was the last ray of extinguished hope as our consistent failure to invest in a competent defence saw a killer late defeat when for all the world it looked like us that would snatch it.
“The fact that Norwich have Palace and Sunderland next 2 games should see them over the horizon, leaving the mackems the only rival we can reasonably catch.
“I won’t go as far to say the future of the club has never looked so bleak but there have been few lower points.
“The only sliver of consolation is that next year the travelling fans travelling may get a bit more return on their investment from Championship grounds.”
“Can we play for the whole match?”
“We just can’t defend for toffee.
“Showed a bit of heart towards the end of the game but too little too late, a lot like Ashley’s appointment of Rafa.”
“What’s the quickest way to Bristol?”
Leazes Park Ender:
“A devastating way to lose and our chances of remaining in the top flight are now very low. This day will live long in the memory once we know that relegation is a mathematical certainty.
“Football is a cruel game.
“Many fans on social media saying this is all deserved. They’re probably right, but there is still a part of me left thinking how a club like Newcastle with some of the talents they have are in such a state. We’ve been out-punched by clubs with lower resources.
“The damage was done way before Benitez joined. The blame lies with Mr Ashley, Charnley and Carr. Not to mention McClaren. The impact of strategic blunders now being reaped.
“As we stare into the abyss of Championship football I’m left wondering (and worrying) what Newcastle United’s long term future actually looks like.”
“So long farewell, auf wiedersehen good night.
“Adieu to ye and ye and ye and ye.
“Didn’t turn up first half, pressed hard second and got rewards – but lucky not to be two or three down.
“If ever there was an advert for 442 and playing with two strikers it was that second half.
“Gutted Mitro didn’t start, what a huge impact coming on. Massive bollock dropped by Rafa, what was be thinking?
Yet again we don’t start until we are one down! Jesus wept man.
“The writing is on the wall in bigger letters than Brian scribed on the Roman Palace in the Life of Brian.
“Sissoko and Gini played starring roles today in their own version of the memoirs of the invisible man. Hang your heads lads.
“Thought we made their striker look like Didier Drogba on steroids even though he’s the calibre of Andreas Andersson on Mogadon.
“After all the concern about Darlow he made two great first half saves and didn’t do too bad in the end.
“Chancel looked rusty to say the least but defensively we have been pi** poor all season and kept up our ratio of conceding at least 2 per game.
“There’s always another day, but that feels like a nail in the lid.
“NUFC till I die.”
“We will be relegated due to the idiotic transfers made this season and the moron who managed the team for most of it.
“We spent £80m on mostly the wrong players, this defence is the worst I have ever seen and I watched Bramble and Boumsong.
“Disgusted, the club deserves relegating.”
