Newcastle 1 Manchester City 1 – Instant fan/writer reaction

Newcastle 1 Manchester City 1  Tuesday 19 April 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Nat Seaton:

“A proper footie match!!

“Wish we had more than 4 games to save ourselves having seen tonight’s performance. I fear it’s all come too late.

“Really enjoyed it and I haven’t been able to say that many times this season!”

Jamie Smith:

“Exhilarating game with some terrific committed performances – but while that point may come in handy I fear it wasn’t enough.

“A different story had Wijnaldum squared for Colback at the end.

“The incompetence of the linesman for the Aguero goal is something that is long beyond a joke.

“The TV facilities could easily be used to prevent this kind of miscarriage of justice, as they are in every other major sport.

“There could be a good few jobs lost because of his inability to do his.”

Paul Lyon:

“Excellent performance from the lads, play like that every week and we’ll be fine.

“If it wasn’t for some poor officiating we might have won.

“Rafa has the team looking organised and is rotating the squad as you’d expect a good manager would.”

James Rutherford:

“Could be a valuable point at the end of the season but got to go down as a missed opportunity. City were there for the taking.

“What a partnership Lascelles and Mbemba are turning into, another colossal performance from the two youngsters.

“Even bigger task on Saturday away to Liverpool, but fingers crossed it will be a happy Anfield return for Rafa.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“Good performances all over the park tonight. Benitez is starting to make progress with this lot. He was brought in a bit late it would seem. He’s just running out of games.

“This basement battle has more twists left in it and there remains a chance, where none existed before.

“The nerves are jangling. We need others to slip up as well taking points. It won’t be easy.

“Terrible linesman tonight.”

Jamie Swan

“Excellent gutsy performance against City tonight.

“Can’t help but feel disappointed as I reckon they were there for the taking.

“The match officials managed to make yet another catastrophic error tonight. Just can’t comprehend how Agueros goal gets allowed. The lino was apparently enjoying a bine in a deck chair behind the goal at the time.

“We need decisions to go for us but against City we seem to keep ending up on the wrong end of some stinkers.

“Best chances of the game should have got us that win, Sissoko breaking away in the 1st half ended in a familiar tame effort, Mitro rise at the far post in the 2nd when I thought a Mackem carbon copy was coming and of course Gini at the very end making my liver swap places with my kidneys in anguish.

“Can’t knock the effort. Shame we haven’t shown 1/3rd of that early doors or we wouldn’t be in this mess.

“Well done lads. Well done Rafa. Let’s see where we end up.”

Notts Toon:

“Much better performance than the Swansea match. Tiote was better than he has been in a very long time, same for Sissoko – and the two centre halves were solid again.

“Townsend a constant threat, people may disagree but I thought Cisse was great and little Vurn with a superb goal and a solid display.

“Overall, happy with that.”
