Mark Lawrenson is full of contradictions talking about Newcastle v Swansea

Mark Lawrenson sees nothing but negatives with Newcastle United at the moment.

However, despite this he has predicted Newcastle to beat an in-form Swansea 2-1 on Saturday.

Whilst the Welsh club were keeping a clean sheet and beating Chelsea last weekend, Newcastle were trying to beat their own record in terms of how quickly a team can fall apart – allowing Shane Long to walk through the midfield and defence after only four minutes, setting Newcastle United on their way to a ninth away defeat in a row.

Mark Lawrenson thinks that display at St.Mary’s was ’embarrassing’ and thinks the Newcastle players ran the white flag up before kick-off.

Despite this, Rafa Benitez insists his players have done everything right in training this week and are determined to start putting things right against Swansea.

They say that ‘winning isn’t everything’ but on Saturday afternoon it most definitely is, whatever the lunchtime result is between Norwich and Sunderland (Lawrenson predicts a 1-1 draw).

Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:

“Newcastle’s performance in their defeat by Southampton was just embarrassing. I think the white flag came out about a minute before kick-off.

“Magpies boss Rafael Benitez said after that game “we have got four home games left”, but the problem is they have not won many home games all season – four out of 15.

“Swansea are clear of the relegation zone after last week’s win over Chelsea, and the pressure is off them now.

“They might relax a tiny bit on Saturday, which might help Newcastle a little, although it might also mean Swansea play with more freedom and put in a better display.

“It is hard to predict what we will see from the Welsh side but I am going for a Newcastle win. While they can still stay up, every single game will be their biggest of the season.”
