Ex-Middlesbrough player bears grudge after 9 years – Desperate for Newcastle relegation
Nine years later, former Middlesbrough player Mido definitely appears to bear a grudge.
The journeyman striker played for numerous clubs including Spurs, Barnsley, West Ham, Zamalek, Ajax, Marseille, Gent and Roma – but his 25 match stay on Teesside saw him at odds with Newcastle United and the fans.
On 26 August 2007, Newcastle travelled to Middlesbrough and played out a 2-2 draw.
Charles N’Zogbia and Mark Viduka twice gave Newcastle the lead, only for Mido and Julio Arca to produce equalisers.
However, the big talking point in the media afterwards, was alleged racist chanting by the travelling fans.
Some Newcastle supporters chanting:
‘Mido, he has a bomb you know’
Afterwards, some Newcastle fans claimed that it wasn’t racist abuse but just pointing out the physical resemblance to ‘shoe bomber’ Richard Reid.
Nevertheless, some Newcastle fans were taken to court and found guilty of racist abuse.
Mido is now no doubt getting satisfaction from both Newcastle’s struggles and Middlesbrough’s position, Boro go top and four points above the third placed team if they win at home against Reading tonight.
