Alan Pardew looking to set Premier League record

Alan Pardew is having a right good go at breaking records this season.

After offering Crystal Palace fans early promise and reaching as high as fifth in the table, Pardew’s team have the gone on the kind of run that Newcastle fans had become all too familiar with.

Palace will be joined on the same number of points by Norwich tomorrow, if the Canaries win at Selhurst Park.

At the moment they are in 16th position and haven’t won a PL match since 19 December 2015.

That 14 game run without a win is something even Alan Pardew couldn’t manage at Newcastle, though he had some good cracks at it.

2012/13 – Newcastle won only 4 games out of 22 at one point.

2013/14 – Under Pardew in a 20 game spell, Newcastle lost 14 matches.

2014/15 – Pardew and Newcastle started the season with no wins in the first seven PL games.

Alan Pardew’s current run is already lifting him into some exalted company and if Palace fail to win tomorrow, they will make it 15 without a win and go even higher.

In 24 years of Premier League football only seven clubs have gone more than 15 PL matches without a win.

These are the worst losing runs as it stands now:

14 Premier League games without a win

Wolves (2011/12), Wimbledon (1995/96), West Ham (2002/03), Sunderland (2009/10), Sunderland (2005/06), Sunderland (2005/06 happened twice that season!), Newcastle (1998/99 – 1999/2000), Middlesbrough (2008/09), Manchester City (2003/04), Coventry City (1995/96)

15 Premier League games without a win

West Brom (2004/05), Swindon (1993/94), Manchester City 1995/96, Ipswich (2001/2002), Crystal Palace (1997/98)

16 Premier League games without a win

Nottingham Forest (1996/97), Leicester (2001/02), QPR (2012/13)

19 Premier League games without a win

Nottingham Forest (1998/99), Aston Villa (2015/16)

20 Premier League games without a win

Sunderland (2002/03)

32 Premier League games without a win

Derby County (2007/08)

As you can see, Newcastle make one honourable appearance – Ruud Gullit managing this at the end of 1998/99 running into the start of 1999/2000.

Sunderland have had a good go with three 14 game runs without a win (including two in one season!), plus the second best ever of 20 matches in 2002/03.

Aston Villa are truly awful this season and they managed 19 without a win after their opening day win at Bournemouth.

Whilst there is a Newcastle twist to the story of the worst ever Premier League side.

Step forward Derby County who went an incredible 32 games without a win and if it hadn’t been for a certain team managed by Sam Allardyce, it would have been a full season without a win.

In 2007/08, Derby County ended the season with only 11 points, their season reading Won 1 Drawn 8 and Lost 29.

If anybody wonders just how bad things got under Sam Allardyce (only this morning he was blaming the Newcastle fans again!), just consider the fact that of the 11 points Derby managed that season, four of them were from Newcastle.

Beating United at their place and grabbing a draw at St James Park, before Allardyce was thankfully sacked at last.

So anyway, good luck Alan Pardew tomorrow, we continue to follow your career with interest, as a sideshow to our own continuing misery on Tyneside.
