The final proof that Newcastle United are in denial
The recent Newcastle United fans forum suggested an astonishing degree of complacency within St James Park.
Despite only 12 games to go and stuck in the bottom three, the responses from the club were much along the lines of ‘don’t worry, we’ll pick up the points, everything will be fine’ etc etc.
One more match has passed since then, the seventh away defeat in a row and it took until injury time for Newcastle to force the Stoke keeper into a serious save.
So despite another defeat, dropping to 19th place in the table and only 11 matches left now, that whiff of total denial within Newcastle United gets ever stronger.
Each Friday early evening, the club send out a ‘Newcastle United Weekly Update’ by email, to Newcastle fans who have registered for it.
This promotes the most important articles, interviews, news and so on, that has appeared on the official club website in the past week. Of course it also contains numerous attempts to try and entice you to spend money, which is fair enough.
So when I received the latest one just after 6pm tonight Friday 4 March), I opened it up.
With the crucial relegation six pointer tomorrow, I was expecting it to maybe point me to a stirring press conference with McClaren, an interview with one of the senior players explaining how they are going to put things right against Bournemouth, maybe a message from Lee Charnley or god forbid the club owner.
Basically just an acceptance of the position the club are in and how they are going to come out fighting and start righting the wrongs of this season. Especially when you had the previous match/defeat only on Wednesday at Stoke to talk about and analyse etc.
Instead, the reality was somewhat different.
The four most important articles they are promoting at this crucial time for Newcastle United were:
1 Buy a match programme.
2 Who the referee is on Saturday.
3 Kick-off times for Under 18 matches.
4 News about a young reserve midfielder who has never appeared for the first team and whohas gone out on loan to League One.
You quite literally couldn’t make it up.
I can’t wait for the one in the final week of the season before we play Tottenham, especially if we can still go down on that last matchday.
I can just imagine what they will be seeing as the key stories:
1 Interview with the new tea lady.
2 Great ideas for places to go on holiday in the summer.
3 In-depth article about how the NUFC Under 5s have got on this season.
4 Lee Charnley’s hairstyling tips…
