Steve McClaren names the only four Newcastle players who showed right character
Steve McClaren has stated that only four players showed the ‘right character’ against Bournemouth to get the club out of relegation trouble.
Yet another shocking performance, tactics, clueless team selection and substitutions, saw Newcastle collapse against the visitors and lose 3-1 at home.
Steve McClaren declared that the only four above criticism were Rob Elliot, Jonjo Shelvey, Jack Colback and Daryl Janmaat, the other 10 players presumably falling well short in the Head Coach’s eyes.
Very ironic that McClaren has given such a savage assessment of his team’s character, after the club produced one of their most embarrassing PR stunts (which takes some doing!) of the Mike Ashley era.
Only around 90 minutes before kick-off, the club circulated a statement that was allegedly ‘from’ the players and which gave public backing for Steve McClaren.
Well the players certainly proved that on the pitch…
“That performance is not good enough. We showed good organisation and fight and everything on Wednesday (defeat at Stoke), wanted to produce that again and it was kind of an edgy beginning.
“I think there was a lack of discipline, the team got stretched and I think Bournemouth took advantage.
“I think once the first goal…the first goal is always important when you are at the bottom and in home game we didn’t get it – unlucky with the deflection and after that we wanted to press and we didn’t follow up in that and became ill-disciplined.
“But I think the poorest thing was on the ball, we were not our usual, we are usually very good attacking.
“We had two or three players; Rob Elliot, Daryl Janmaat, Jack Colback and certainly Jonjo Shelvey showing the character we need to get out of this.
“The thing that we hold our…hang our hat on, is that we have 10 games to go and play everybody around us.
“It is a four team league and it is still only one point (below fourth bottom Sunderland) and we need to fight – but we can’t play like this.
“You could see we were kind of pressing, at times stupidly, and getting picked off.
“The organisation goes, the compactedness goes, once that goes we are vulnerable with the back four and so it proved. They tried but it’s just not working.”
