Paul Merson says Newcastle are ‘finished’ if this happens

Paul Merson says that the pressure has now reached even greater heights for Newcastle United and Sunderland.

The surprise win for Norwich at West Brom has now put them four points ahead of Newcastle and with a better goal difference, they are two ahead of the mackems.

Paul Merson says that a defeat for Newcastle would really put ‘the (‘Black’ presumably) cat amongst the pigeons’.

The former Arsenal player thinking that Newcastle ‘are finished’ if they then followed that up with a defeat at Norwich in the following match.

That nightmare scenario would see Newcastle seven points behind Norwich and at least four behind Sunderland, both clubs would also have better goal differences than United.

Merson also sees both north east clubs potentially coming out of these next couple of rounds of fixtures in deep trouble.

If the derby was a draw and then Norwich beat Newcastle on Saturday 2 April, that would put the Canaries four points ahead of Sunderland if the mackems lost at home to West Brom on that Saturday.

Paul Merson speaking to Sky Sports:

“It makes Newcastle against Sunderland very important, if Newcastle lose that at home, that really does put the cat amongst the pigeons.

“If they get beat on Sunday….and then Norwich go and beat them, that is it, they are finished.

“We had talked about how big this game was…but it has just got bigger.

“Even for Sunderland, they are looking at it and thinking ‘if we draw and Newcastle get beat by Norwich, we are in trouble’.

Whichever way you look at it, Newcastle HAVE TO win today.
