Danny Blind says Daryl Janmaat is gutted he won’t be in shop window this week

Netherlands Manager Danny Blind, says that Daryl Janmaat ‘really regretted’ that he had to pull out of the Dutch squad with a knee injury, as he hoped to put himself in the shop window in case of Newcastle being relegated this season.

With two such high profile games against France and England, Daryl Janmaat could have hoped for a lot of coverage if he’d been selected and played well.

With five Dutch internationals at St James Park: Gini Wijnaldum, Daryl Janmaat, Tim Krul, Vurnon Anita and Siem de Jong, Newcastle’s season-long relegation struggle is a major story in Holland.

Blind says that Newcastle’s poor form and possible relegation is bad news for him but especially so for the five players involved.

The Dutch boss says that the division/level that players are playing in, isn’t the only factor BUT he admitted it is a massive advantage to be playing in the Premier League (and doing well!).

Danny Blind adding that the five Newcastle players (and others) understand that perfectly as well – out of the spotlight in the Championship would make it very unlikely for any player to be selected for the national squads, although there are exceptions even with the major countries/teams.

Danny Blind speaking to De Telegraaf:

“It is worrying for me – but especially for the guys at Newcastle United.

“The level (players play at) is not necessarily determinative –  it is also about the individual – but it is an advantage to play in the Premier League. Ultimately, it is included (in the selection process).

“They (Newcastle players) realise that (playing at top level is big positive) too.

“Janmaat really regretted that he had to cancel.

“He wanted to be with Orange (Netherlands squad) as he was dying to be in the spotlight, to attract (potentially) another club in case Newcastle United are actually relegated.”

As well as the discussion around the Netherlands squad selection process, the fact that Daryl Janmaat was so desperate to be involved in these internationals, strongly suggests that his absence isn’t just a precaution – and he must be very doubtful for Norwich in nine days time.
