Claudio Ranieri says he can’t believe the mess Newcastle United are in

Newcastle United may have cancelled their pre-match press conference but Claudio Ranieri was happy to talk today ahead of Monday night’s match.

The Leicester boss was his usual charming self and once again played down Leicester’s chances of winning the Premier League, saying they are only thinking about the Newcastle match and it will only be at the end of the season when they might pat themselves on the back for Europa League or Champions League qualification, or something even better…

Bad news (what more??) for Newcastle as well, with Claudio Ranieri confirming that Riyad Mahrez has been training as normal after his injury scare last weekend, the winger only coming off against Watford due to cramp.

As for Monday’s opponents, Ranieri can’t believe that after spending so much money, Newcastle are in such a shocking position.

The Leicester boss says United have ‘good’ players and manager, as well as ‘fantastic fans’.

I think we can agree that he got one out of three right there!

Claudio Ranieri

“He (Riyad Mahrez) is good, everybody’s in a good condition, no problems – it was a little cramp (why Mahrez came off at Watford last weekend).

“We are not thinking about how many points, we are only thinking about Newcastle.

“It is a difficult match, they are in a dangerous position…I can’t believe why, they spent more than one hundred million and I think it will be another difficult match as they are fighting to survive.

“I’m very surprised (that Newcastle are second bottom), as they have a good manager, good players and fantastic fans.

“We have to fight and at the end (of the season) we can say that ‘we achieved this’, ‘we are in the Europa League – fantastic’, ‘we are in the Champions League, amazing’.”
