Saturday’s predicted Newcastle team v Chelsea
Here is the predicted Newcastle team v Chelsea.
After a convincing performance and albeit a single goal victory against West Brom, there are unlikely to be too many surprises in Steve McClaren’s team selection and formation.
Friday morning saw McClaren claim that’We have got to go there (Chelsea) with no fear and have a go’, suggesting he was going to dispense with the usual negative away tactics.
However, I think we will see the same front six players and the only question will be how they will be arranged.
McClaren had Jonjo Shelvey playing a defensive role at Everton and he had zero impact going forward, so hopefully we will see instead Shelvey encouraged to push forward ten or twenty yards and try to put pressure on the opposition.
Jonjo Shelvey did this with Swansea earlier this season when he played very well and the Welsh club came away with a 2-2 draw.
With Cheick Tiote surely set to play alongside him in the midfield after their double act against West Brom, the Ivory Coast midfielder’s presence should help encourage McClaren to allow Shelvey more freedom.
The likes of Mitrovic, Townsend and Sissoko look nailed on, though I suppose there is always the very small possibility that one day Gini Wijnaldum will be rested one day unless he starts turning up at away games.
The Newcastle Head Coach confirmed on Friday that Daryl Janmaat can play after recovering from an ankle problem and a dead leg, whilst Taylor will surely continue next to Coloccini after an encouraging return against a very limited West Brom.
I feel left-back though will be where McClaren will make a change, with a fit again Jack Colback selected ahead of Rolando Aarons and Jamaal Lascelles to try and contain Willian, who was excellent in Chelsea’s home draw with Manchester United last Sunday.
Emmanuel Riviere is also confirmed as fit again, though hard to see him featuring in the starting eleven, likewise with Seydou Doumbia who looked way off match fitness when playing 45 minutes for the reserves on Monday.
