Newcastle fans vote overwhelmingly to offer these players new contracts

Earlier this week we asked Newcastle fans the question; ‘Which out of contract Newcastle players would you keep this summer?’

Our thanks to the thousands of you who took the time to vote and the five soon to be out of contract players drew a mixed response.

The five in question were Steven Taylor, Rolando Aarons, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan and Kevin Mbabu, who all see their contracts end this summer.

There haven’t been any signs of moves in recent times by the club to nail these particularly players down but that may well be tied in, at least to an extent, with the latest relegation struggle.

Newcastle presumably waiting to check which division they’ll be in before seeing who they want to keep and/or what they want to offer.

Whilst the club may not have made any (public) indications yet, the Newcastle fans have done via our poll, these are the percentages of voting fans who wanted to keep each of the five:

98% Rolando Aarons

97% Kevin Mbabu

71% Steven Taylor

1% Sylvain Marveaux

0.6% Gabriel Obertan

As you can see, almost universal support in wanting to keep the little used but full of promise Kevin Mbabu and Rolando Aarons, whilst it was a similar case at the other end of the spectrum with Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan, with almost all fans seeing that their time is at last up.

Steven Taylor managed to split the vote with roughly seven in every 10 Newcastle fans wanting to retain him, his performance against West Brom no doubt doing any harm.

If Taylor could stay fit until the end of the season and show his best form, then it may well look an obvious move to offer him another, albeit shorter, new contract.

Though of course that is the rub with Steven Taylor, keeping fitness and form has been elusive for much of his Newcastle career and with only 18 Premier League starts in the past 32 months, he still has it all to do in showing he can be of lasting benefit to the club.
