Newcastle 2 Lillestrom 1

A 3pm Saturday kick-off (2pm UK time) in La Manga has seen Newcastle win 2-1 in their hastily arranged friendly after Steve McClaren couldn’t find a team to play in the UK.

Gini Wijnaldum rounded the Lillestrom keeper after only three minutes to give United the lead.

However, only five minutes later some poor defending let in Jradi to score for the Norwegians.

The rest of the half saw Lillestrom on top for most of it, with Darlow making some canny stops to keep them out.

Only change at half-time was Woodman taking over in goal but as the second-half progressed, Newcastle became ever more dominant.

Four changes were made at the 66 minute mark and within nine minutes of those changes, Rolando Aarons scored the winner. Ayoze Perez touching the ball to young Jamie Sterry who crossed for Aarons to head home.

Barlaser was the only other sub to make an appearance as McClaren left Sissoko and Coloccini on the sidelines.

Jonjo Shelvey captained the side in Coloccini’s absence, with Steven Taylor taking over those duties for the final 25 minutes when Shelvey was subbed for Gouffran.

NUFC (4-2-3-1):

Darlow (Woodman 46),  Janmaat (Sterry 66), Taylor, Lascelles, Gibson (Barlaser 82), Saivet, Shelvey (Gouffran 66), Townsend (Aarons 66) Wijnaldum (Riviere 66), Perez, Doumbia

Unused on the bench:

Williams, Coloccini, Sissoko
