Newcastle 1 West Brom 0 – The instant fan/writer reaction

Newcastle 1 West Brom 0  Saturday 6 February 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Ben Cooper:

“Three vital points and well deserved against an appalling shambles of an opposition.

“The only negative is that we didn’t score and win more comfortably.

“Nice to have the real Tiote and Taylor back, though I won’t hold my breath that they will be like that every week.

“Out of the bottom three and hopefully we will stay out.”

Jamie Smith:

“Strong performance but absolute palpitations at the end as we nearly blew it on the break, saved by Janmaat’s vital intervention.

“Tiote MOM for me, dunno what went on with his goal, how can the same sh*t happen to the same guy twice.

“This was an essential win, but we need much more to survive. A tough few weeks ahead and we need to improve the killer instinct as missed chances could have proved costly again today”

James Rutherford:

“Good response after Wednesday’s shambles. Couldn’t afford not to win that.

“Not sure we would have against different opposition, but fortunately that West Brom side were one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

“Shelvey back to his best after midweek and Townsend was much more influential.

“First time in a long time we haven’t had to rely on Wijnaldum.

“Credit to Aarons who looked much more competent at left back compared to the Everton game.

“Huge win with some tough games coming up.”

Nat Seaton:

“WE WON! That’s all that mattered for me today.

“We made it so much harder than it should have been against a very poor team.

“They gave everything and were looking fatigued well before the end but thankfully kept at it for the precious 3 points.”

Paul Lyon:

“Grateful of the 3 points but we made hard work of that one!

“I felt that Mitrovic as a focal point was spent after 70 mins and a change was needed to put the game to bed, but it never came.

“Regardless, good performance overall and a massive 3 points. Special mention for Aarons who despite the tough time at Everton didn’t seem overawed and did well.

“Onwards and upwards (I hope) .”

Leazes Park Ender:

“That was a vast improvement but they still need a better finisher up front.

“Most other results went our way, but 1-0 at home against a depleted West Brom team feels like thin gruel for the home faithful.

“We’ve given ourselves a chance though. A slim chance. More twists lie ahead though.

“I’m still not certain McClaren can survive this.

“But for now it’s a victory and for that we have to be relieved. “

Notts Toon:

“Much better – are we turning a corner or walking around in circles?

“Also, thank you Aston Villa.”

George Stainsby:

“That’ll do!”

Jamie Swan:

“Didn’t care how it came,  the points were what mattered and those three MASSIVE buggers are ours on an afternoon of good results for us.

“One nil sounds tight – it wasn’t. Pulis the football antichrist was at it again with tactics from 300 AD battlefields.

“A deserved win against a wretched team and manager.  Happily no kick in the clems goal from Berahino either. Should have been more, and have given ourselves a chance – again.

“Delighted for Mitro. Delighted to be out the bottom three.

“The ills of the season are not solved but lets enjoy it. Have a good night folks!”
