The hardest working Premier League teams: How do Newcastle measure up…?

When it comes to distance covered this season, how do the Newcastle United players measure up compared to their Premier League rivals.

The table below shows the total distance covered in the 26 matches so far, by every Premier League club.

Table compiled by Sky Sports using EA Sports Player Performance data:

As you can see, Newcastle United are in 13th place in this particular table, just behind Sunderland.

The 2854km covered by the Newcastle players, over 200km less than Bournemouth at the top.

No surprise to see Aston Villa’s players rock bottom by some distance, as the team seems to have given up some time ago.

Some of the teams below Newcastle tend to dominate possession which explains at least partly why they may not figure higher in the table, letting the ball do the work. The likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Everton falling into this category, whilst Swansea and Stoke could both possibly be included under that category.

With Steve McClaren admitting that particularly on away games he is happy for the opposition to control possession, you might have thought the distance ran by Newcastle players would be higher, having to chase and close down the opposition for most of the 90 minutes.

The minimum you look for is hard work from your players and in that respect, I suppose Bournemouth and West Brom (bottom half of the PL but top three of this table) are the two teams beyond reproach when it comes to effort regardless of results.
