Everton 3 Newcastle 0 Wednesday 3 February 7.45pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:
“The curious case of Newcastle Utd…
“On paper a decent looking line up of players. Money spent in two consecutive transfer windows. A team full of internationals. It all has the feel of heading in the right direction.
“Then we have the uncomfortable truth of the way this team has played all season. The manager’s inability to get results, and the ongoing slide into the relegation zone.
“More of that slide on show tonight at Goodison Park.
“McClaren has really failed to deliver in terms of results and he must carry the can.
“The room for manoeuvre is diminishing. Not many games left to get clear of that bottom three.
“Lose at the weekend and a change of manager is needed. “
“How bad was that? Answer – absolutely terrible (I’m being polite!).
“Hard to believe we went into the game with those tactics against a team who had only won ONE Premier League games in the last TEN.
“Another long drive home with no doubt some interesting opinions in the car…”
“Could easily sum that 90 minutes up with a couple of expletives…“Total ineptness in defence. No one willing to make a tackle. No one willing to track runs. No one willing to get in the face of the opposition.
“I laughed at people’s claims that Coloccini was in the “form of his life” after the Man Utd game, and I think I was right.
“But he was not the only criminal tonight, Sissoko gave his usual deplorable performance, but Shelvey probably just edged the “who can give the ball away more” competition.
“Quick side note, has anyone seen Wijnaldum? Never seems to get on the bus when we play away.
“West Brom is a must must must must win game.
“In summary, absolute sh**e.”
“Awful, sadly it’s what we’ve come to expect from NUFC on the road this season.
“Are the players aware of our current league position? Because the lack of energy, desire and commitment was that of a side with their flip flops on ready for a summer break.
“McClaren’s face looked liked he’d given up/ran out of ideas.
“A lot of pressure on getting something out of all of our remaining home games. With a defence that needed improvement now decimated by injuries and suspension.”
“First half was a training exercise for Everton, second half was a slight improvement.
“Tactics wrong again, we started slow and let them settle on the ball.
“McClaren has to go or he will definitely relegate us.
And then we competely self-destruct at the end, disgusting.”
“Confused.com, bemused.com, p45.com…
“What exactly was the plan?
“I’ve not really had a dig at McLaren before today, but he has absolutely baffled me tonight.
“We need to attack, we need to score goals, we need to win games, we need points man!
“Honestly just write off all away games this season with this lot under Schteeeve, as we are more rotten on the road than the flattened Hedgehog I saw this morning having its giblets munched by a couple of magpies. The irony.
“We can’t defend with a back 4. We always look confused with 3 at the back. The only time we look good is when we go for it.
“So we go into this battle packed tighter than Linford’s lunchbox and with as much attacking threat as my dead grannie’s knitting basket.
“Everton are no great shakes at the minute, yet complete the double over us. They were nervous and there to be got at from the first whistle. Second best and spanked in the end – 14 to go.
“Sort it out man FFS!! SMAC you got it WRONG.”
