Chelsea 5 Newcastle 1 – The instant fan/writer reaction

Chelsea 5 Newcastle 1  Saturday 13 February 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Jamie Smith:

“This was frustratingly obvious after last week’s sound showing, that we would doubtless return to our usual awful away form.

“Not acceptable. McClaren doesn’t have any tactical acumen and seems to send them out to invite sides on to them in away matches. Ridiculous that other results saw us out of the bottom 3 and we’ve plunged back into it due to our own incompetence.

“£85 million for this? Someone needs to wake up at NUFC.”

James Rutherford:

“Embarrassing yet again. No desire from too many players.

“Nice to know that Taylor and Tiote’s performances last week were just a blip. Normality resumed.

“Changes have to be made for our next game against Stoke. One big change should be made before that game, but I can’t see McClaren being given the boot no matter how we play.

“At least all the players have got a holiday to look forward to now, just a shame most of them were already on the beach.”

Nat Seaton:

“An absolute embarrassment.

“It is the way we lost not just the fact that we lost.

“18 days for them to ponder on that performance until the next game, not sure if that is a good or a bad thing!

“Enjoy the sun in Spain lads with your warm weather training…”

Paul Lyon:

“Switched on and we were already 2 nil down, that was quickly followed by the 3rd. My effort to watch the game then matched those in black & white playing it, as it just became background noise to my pottering round the house.

“My motivation to watch our away games has nigh on dissipated. How a team can be so Jekyll & Hyde is beyond me and by the looks of things beyond our manager.

“The team now have 18 days before our next league game to lick their wounds in sunnier climes. Us fans meanwhile will get to see us anchored in the bottom 3 with every unavoidable look at the league table, without an immediate fixture to try and change that.

“A bit of quality shown from Townsend scant consolation from a thoroughly desperate performance.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“I’ve no doubt Steve McClaren is a nice fella. In fact I’d go as far to say he’s a decent bloke.

“There is no question there.

“However, his inability to get results this disastrous season is totally unacceptable. It’s been so bad it’s like some sort of ceaseless nightmare.

“Tonight’s latest horror show adding to a catalogue of ineptitude. He’s failed tactically and is clearly not motivating a squad which has had £80m lavished on it.

“My mind is made up. Time for change. Let’s see if Charnley and Mr Ashley agree.

“We can’t go on like this.”

Notts Toon:

“Repeat of the Everton game, in fact worse.

“McClaren will relegate us for sure.”

George Stainsby:

“It’s like losing twice in one match. Three points and a goal difference that could see us off.”

Jamie Swan:

“What can you say?

“Our players looked Sunday League today. No doubt instead of harsh words being shared at half time, there was a couple of cans of Fosters necked, a quick draw on a B&H, a Greggs steak bake gobbled and a few quick spews.

“Livened them up for 5 mins anyway.

“About as professional as the rag and bone men who will tarmac your drive and sell you a bag of pegs.

“Shambles does not cover it. More pressure piled on ourselves again.

“No shame in losing to Chelsea or Everton away – it’s the manner that we stumbled through it like we just rolled out of a boozer.

“Sissoko by the looks of it had necked 15 pints of Stella and had a little 90 minute kip on the pitch to sleep it off.

“Not including Townsend, Janmaat or Mitro in this – they at least gave it everything and put a shift in.

“Barkeep more ale required. Much effing more, but not for them, they’ve had enough.”
