Another 12 points enough for Newcastle United to avoid relegation?

I watched the relegation six pointer between West Brom and Swansea (1-1, last minute West Brom goal) last night and then read all the articles about being a good result for us…

To be honest, it got me thinking it doesn’t matter what other teams do if we don’t start to pick up points.

We currently sit with 21 points from 23 games.

We finished last season with 39 from 38.

Aston Villa survived last year in 17th with 38 from 38.

As for goal difference – I render that immaterial…….here is why:

Everton (a) – I would like 3 due to the positive transfer deals we have done and that has hopefully given everyone a lift at the club. However, we never get the result against Everton and they are on a barren run and any team on one of them usually end it against us, so would take a point from this one now (1)

West Brom (h) – I don’t think for one second that Berahino is the answer we are looking for at this moment and he hasn’t played regularly in months, not match fit and it would have taken him a month or two to make any difference to our side and we haven’t got that kind of time. However £21/£24 million cash up front from us and still rejected – would love to see Peace and Pulis get dragged into it and go down but there are 3 worse teams than them unfortunately, but won’t stop us getting our second win in eight (3)

Chelsea (a) – It’s true we always show up against the ‘big’ clubs and give them a run for their money. Would love to say it but can see our usual misery against a team that will be looking up rather than down and Stamford Bridge has not been kind to us (0)

Stoke City (a) – Funny team Stoke, play well, fight well and then let themselves down – not against us at the Britannia though (0)

Bournemouth (h) – A team on form but I smell a point here!! (1)

Leicester City (a) – That challenge for Europe and a chance to be a ‘big’ club this season. Think that we can give them a good game and show a little quality but ultimately because their ambitions are higher than ours at this moment, they will have too much for us (0)

Mackems (h) – Dreaded 7 in a row boll**ks!!!!This is a classic scenario where one of us could go down and it would be a minimum 16 months till we played each other again (bar cups).  A relegation battle and the fact our foes have won the last 6, gives the added pressure to this game and pressure does funny things to people. Right now – I would take a point!! (1)

Norwich City (a) – Think we raise the bar for this and get what we came for via a dirty, hard fought game. They are struggling in the latter part of the season and only time will tell if they have more than us come the end of the season (3)

Southampton (a) – Again, another ground that has not been kind to us and Charlie Austin will be wanting to make a statement in this one. Who knows where Southampton will be in the league by this point but can’t imagine anything other than a European place is in their sights(0)

Swansea (h) – We aren’t known to do well against other teams fighting for their lives and unless the team we have has glued together very well – I see a nervous point here. (1)

Liverpool (a) – We always end up playing at Anfield towards the end of the season!! Again, another ground that has not been kind to us over the years and I can’t actually remember the last time we showed up there and gave them a good game!! (0)

Crystal Palace (h) – Palace still looking for a win after losing the previous 15!!! Well, we can all live in hope that they are down here with us but I can’t see the gods allowing us that pleasure. Either way, we give Palace 4 points this season and Pardew another point towards safety (1)

Aston Villa (a) – Villa have gone by now and will be playing Championship football next year. Pressure will be off them so a tense game gives us a point (1)

Spurs (h) – It could all come down to this. I hope not. This game will have implications for both clubs’ final league positions and whilst we could be nervous and the crowd could get frustrated, Spurs’ sights will be on which European competition they will be playing in next year. Not hopeful, just realistic (0)

Manchester City (h) TBC – Doesn’t matter when this game gets re-arranged for. The league will be City’s goal and I can’t see us getting in the way of that (0)

So there we have it. I have tried to be a realist instead of my usual optimistic self and so can see us picking up another 12 points. That will leave us on 33 come the end of the campaign. Now, I am not saying that we are dead certs to get relegated even if all my predicted results are correct. Food for thought though – how many points will those around us pick up?

15 games to go now, lots of money shelled out in the past month. Will that be enough for us to pull ourselves out of the mire or are we relying on other teams to finish worse than us? As I said – I hope I am wrong – come the end of the Norwich game I think we will know where we stand.

The only way that I can see it beig different going forward, and someone else mentioned it on this site yesterday – Steve……stop playing with two defensive midfielders and give it a bloody go!!!!!!!
