Andy Gray predicts Chelsea v Newcastle

Andy Gray has been looking at this afternoon’s Chelsea v Newcastle clash and sees one team as ‘erratic’ and the other ‘getting better’.

No prizes for guessing which is which…

Chelsea have certainly become harder to beat under Guus Hiddink with five wins and six draws in his 11 games (all competitions) so far, though recent home draws against West Brom and Everton don’t suggest they have improved all that much.

Manchester United were winning at Stamford Bridge until the very final stages on Sunday but Andy Gray thinks that if Chelsea reproduce that second half pressing display, they will enjoy a ‘comfortable’ afternoon.

Gray predicts a 3-0 Chelsea win and as he points out, the fact Newcastle have only scored six goals in 13 away games (all competitions) doesn’t exactly inspire.

Steve McClaren has given conflicting interviews in recent days, on the one hand claiming that the team owe it to the fans to go and have a real go and attack the opposition, whilst on the other hand leaving supporters bemused when he has also said that Newcastle have struggled away from home because they have played too much on the ‘front foot‘.

If McClaren does the usual sitting back and waiting for the opposition to score then surely only a matter of time before Chelsea get their first goal, so fingers crossed he has turned over a new leaf to give the team a chance of confounding Andy Gray and other doubters…

Andy Gray writing for PaddyPower:

“I know Chelsea are going to win this.

“Newcastle have been erratic, the home side are getting better.

“ If they (Chelsea) take their form in the second half against (ED: Manchester!) United into this game they’ll win comfortably.

Newcastle have only scored six goals away from home all season, that’s the worst record in the division. They’ve conceded 26, over two a game.

“They won’t be able to change that this week.”
