What Spurs fans are saying about Andros Townsend move to Newcastle
Tuesday morning has brought widespread reports that the long anticipated move of Andros Townsend will now go through this week.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is said to have pushed for a conclusion of the deal so that he can strengthen his squad, with Daniel Levy subsequently agreeing to lower the transfer fee closer to Newcastle’s valuation.
Andros Townsend is due to have talks with Newcastle and the deal to be completed in the next couple of days, according to the reports.
What do the Spurs fans make of Andros Townsend’s impending departure though?
We visited one of the top message boards for Spurs fans, ‘The Fighting Cock’, to gauge the mood of their supporters.
The majority of the Tottenham supporters appear to think it is time for Andros Townsend to leave Spurs, though there is a wide range of views as to his ability and what he can offer Newcastle.
Overall it appears that Spurs fans have affection for the player and think he does have ability, though with at times wayward shooting and crossing. Only something that can be properly judged once he gets regular first team football.
Interesting to read the comments about him having being wrongly played on the right and that he is far better on the left. This would make far more sense if Newcastle are indeed buying him, as Sissoko/Janmaat provide the vast majority of the attacks down the right, whilst the left-hand side is almost barren when it comes to attacking threat.
You pay your money and you take your chance.
Spurs fans on Andros Townsend:
‘I’ve never been too impressed with his decision making, ability to actually shoot or even his crosses, so to get that price for at best a future squad player and currently more likely to be a fringe player: Brilliant.
I also like that we in good Levy tradition initially wanted to squeeze £14m out of the lemon. I mean, they just dished out £12m on Shelvey, so you gotta try at least!’
‘If he doesn’t fancy WBA as part of a Berahino deal (& who’d f***ing blame him eh?) why not a loan deal to the barcodes until end of the season? That way he can get regular first team football & show Poch what he (Townsend) believes he is capable of.’
‘Those in the Park Lane and Paxton Uppers can this morning remove the fear of being hit by an Andros pelter for the final 20 minutes of every game ( assuming he would come on after 70 mins of course).
I read that it’s over 2 years since he played a full 90 minutes (in PL). That is incredible. No loss. Bye Bye.’
‘No doubt his performances have been disappointing over the last year. However he has speed, can beat players, tracks back and has a good shot. I thought he was starting to reduce the number of shots ending up in row Z. I think he offers something different to some of the other players and would prefer him on the bench when we need a goal than some others.’
‘Are his row X shots any better though?’
‘Trouble with loaning AT to any PL team is that he could drop in value if he doesn’t perform. If we want to spend £20m on one player then it’s reliant on AT being sold. If he had a future at the club he would be getting game time. He unfortunately burnt his bridges with his tardy public behaviour. I would love him to come good but I just cannot see it happening. With other players I have seen improvement in areas they were uncomfortable with. I haven’t with Andros.’
‘I think AT knew he wasn’t Poch’s cup of tea for a while. Could be the reason behind his loss of temper, as from what I’ve seen of him in interviews, he is a good chap, just frustrated being out the side.
I hope for his sake he gets a move as he has talent but doesn’t fit Poch’s style of play.’
‘Levy, Poch and Townsend need to have a little more respect towards one another! Townsend is not unhappy for a bad reason the guy wants to play his heart out and ain’t really getting the chance as much as he would like. Even more so after having a bust up with one of the coaches. They all need to a get a grip and see sense. The best idea is a loan move abroad to a top club that want to play him. Its a win win all round. Townsend gets to play regularly and gain invaluable experience. While get to keep a young player good enough for the England Team. Either play for us in the future again or maybe sell on for a lot more than £14mil. Townsend will only get better in time!’
‘I suspect Townsend wants to go due to the indifferent attitude towards his unhappiness shown by both Levy and Poch. Be a shame to see him go!’
‘When you start to have a crack at the coaching staff that’s it see you later! His head got too big and he has to go!’
‘Good luck to the lad. If Newcastle figure out he is a natural left winger and play him there, they have a good player. Why the f*** our last 3 managers have played him on the right is unbelievable. He is not very good being played as an inverted winger.’
‘As Poch does not rate and wants to keep a tight rein on squad discipline / harmony then the sale is good news. That said, does not feel great to let go a guy who not so long ago led the charge out of the youth ranks, to first team and England. He has always given his best so, so long and thanks for the effort. Good luck Andros.’
‘Townsend for Perez straight swap anyone?’
‘Why would he prefer Newcastle? Compete with Sissoko, Wijnaldum and Perez for an AM spot? He might be able to take Perez’ spot, but I’m not convinced.
He should go to a club where he’d be a definite first team player. He needs to build confidence. Watford would be great for him.’
‘He hasn’t ever done anything against the club and always tried his best, just a shame that he never learnt to keep his shots down and on target.’
‘Very frustrating player to watch as he gives the impression that he has it all but seldom delivers and is a luxury we don’t need.
I wish him well as an academy product and a decent enough guy!’
