Shola Ameobi signs off at Bolton with superb finish – Watch it here
Shola Ameobi is a victim of the shocking financial state of Bolton Wanders.
The club haven’t even been able to pay their admin staff, never mind the players, and Shola is now a free agent once again as Bolton can’t afford to keep him.
A nice gesture ahead of yesterday’s match saw Neil Lennon and his coaching staff have a whip round to pay those admin staff who can’t rely on the club for their money at the moment.
However, everything came together on the pitch yesterday with a 3-1 win over MK Dons that gives Bolton a fighting chance of survival, only five points from safety.
It was also a perfect end to Shola Ameobi’s time at the club, if that is what it proves to be.
Shola came on for the final 11 minutes with Bolton 2-0 up, only for MK Dons to score in the 89th minute to strike fear into the home team.
However, seconds later Shola Ameobi made sure of the three points with a superb cool finish (watch it below), beating two defenders before applying a classy finish.
I can’t help but note that at almost exactly the same time as Shola was doing his thing, down at Watford the hopeless Emmanuel Riviere was making a right dog’s dinner of a decent headed chance. Following on from Aleksandar Mitrovic providing minimal goal threat as usual.
Not for one second am I advocating signing up free agent Ameobi but yesterday was yet another reminder that apart from midfielder Wijnaldum and the dropped(!) Ayoze Perez, Newcastle don’t have a single natural goalscorer. Something that needs to be addressed immediately in the transfer market.
Neil Lennon still hoping to keep hold of Shola Ameobi:
“We’ll have to see what the situation is and have a chat with the powers that be.
“He’s someone we’d like to keep around, but of course that all depends on finances.
“He’s been great to have around the place and it was nice for him to cap what could have been his last performance for the team with a goal.”
The Shola Ameobi goal below is at 2.20:
