Reports that Newcastle £20m+ bid for Berahino is in the balance

The Berahino transfer speculation has intensified in recent days with claims that the new found reality check Mike Ashley has experienced, includes a serious attempt to buy the West Brom striker.

The transfers of Andros Townsend and Jonjo Shelvey have seen a significant shift to bringing in players who already have a track record in the Premier League.

Sunday morning saw Sunday Express journalist John Richardson tell Sky Sports that his information was that Newcastle had approached West Brom with an offer in excess of £20m.

Richardson says that clearly Berahino wants to go to Tottenham but it is very unlikely they would offer what West Brom are holding out for.

In terms of the likelihood of the  striker moving to Newcastle, he puts it at ’50/50′.

John Richardson speaking on Sky Sports:

“Newcastle haven’t got a natural goal scorer in the ranks. Mitrovic seems a decent player but not a natural goal scorer, or better as an impact player.

“So they are desperate for somebody like Berahino and for once, to be fair to Mike Ashley, he is saying whatever it costs, we will try to get him.

“Newcastle are making up for lost time because over the last few years I’m afraid the recruitment has left a lot to be desired.

“So yes, they are in for Berahino and are prepared to pay over £20m.

“As we know, the player himself would prefer to end up at Tottenham…but I don’t think they are going to come in with that sort of money. Newcastle will and it is 50/50 whether he goes to Newcastle.”

***Sky Sports have now reported that Newcastle have made a £21m cash up front offer for Berahino.
