Newcastle supporters have to feel sorry for the long suffering Liverpool fans…

A comment about Liverpool fans caught my eye this week.

The journalist was talking about whether Jurgen Klopp was the man to bring back the good times to Anfield etc etc.

As Newcastle supporters we are just left (deludedly) shaking our heads as once again we hear about the long suffering Liverpool fans.

Since our contribution (losing FA Cup finalists) to the Manchester United treble of 1999, Newcastle United haven’t been to a single cup final.

If/when Watford put us out of our misery for this year on Saturday, it will confirm it as 17 years without a final.

In comparison, in these barren years for Liverpool fans, they have been to 10 different cup finals, winning 7 of them.

To top it off, Jurgen Klopp has been here two minutes, getting loads of grief and over-analysis from the media/pundits, yet this week he has taken Liverpool to be overwhelming favourites to reach their 11th final in an era when Newcastle have had none.

The 1-0 win at Stoke means even a draw at Anfield in the second leg will put the scousers into next month’s League Cup final.

This is what Liverpool fans have had to put up with:

2000/01 UEFA Cup winners

2000/01 League Cup winners

2000/2001 FA Cup winners

2002/03 League Cup winners

2004/05 League cup finalists

2004/05 Champions League winners

2005/06 FA Cup winners

2006/07 Champions League finalists

2011/12 League Cup winners

2011/12 FA Cup finalists

2015/16 League Cup winners/finalists????

So basically, on average Liverpool fans have had a cup final to go to every one and a half years in the past 16 years whilst Newcastle supporters haven’t had a sniff, yet we are the deluded ones when it comes to questioning the running of the club?

It is ironic that Newcastle United were the renowned cup fighters of the past…

Liverpool just seem to have that knack of making it through a lot of the time, whereas Newcastle just don’t appear to have the winning mentality as a club.

Obviously the arrival of Mike Ashley has simply meant that the cup competitions have become something of zero pleasure, with the club’s stated aim of not competing in them…that was until this season.

Ashley declaring that from now on Newcastle would be making their own luck and would be making cups a priority…before Steve McClaren made five changes to his team and they lost to Sheffield Wednesday reserves (made 10 changes) in the League Cup.

Maybe this weekend will see a new era, Liverpool fans seeing their team going out tonight to Exeter before Newcastle even enter the competition, then McClaren naming a full strength team that then overwhelms Watford and carries us forward to the glory of…the fourth round.
