Mark Lawrenson predicts Watford v Newcastle
Mark Lawrenson has been analysing Newcastle United’s chances at Watford on Saturday.
With Paul Merson already surprisingly tipping Newcastle for a 1-0 win, Mark Lawrenson has gone one better and thinks United will pull off a 2-0 win at Vicarage Road.
Lawrenson points to the fact that Watford have lost their last four Premier League games and looked poor on Monday against Newcastle’s relegation rivals Swansea.
The former Liverpool defender thinks that the first goal is key and if Newcastle get it, then they will come away with three points.
One of his key pieces of evidence is the fact that in 10 PL matches this season when Watford have conceded first, they have won none of them and lost eight, only picking up two points from draws.
I suppose you can also look at it as a small positive that Newcastle have won 33% of the away matches this season when they have scored first…
A 1-0 win at Bournemouth – although the other two games got a bit messy after Newcastle managed the first strike, losing 6-1 at Manchester City and 5-1 to Crystal Palace.
Whilst Watford may be having their own problems, the fact remains that Newcastle have only score five away goals this season and we can only hope the creating of more chances and taking them, as shown against Manchester United and West Ham, will flow over into the upcoming games on the road.
Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:
“Watford have now lost four Premier League games in a row and when I watched their defeat by Swansea on Monday night, it looked like they had hit the wall.
“There was no spark or energy about them – if you score first against them, the Hornets seem to struggle.
“In the 10 league games this season where they have conceded first, they’ve drawn two and lost eight.
“Newcastle were unlucky to lose at Vicarage Road in the FA Cup earlier this month, when they had plenty of chances.
“The Magpies are very unpredictable on the road but I am going to back them this time.”
