Jonjo Shelvey says that he is ‘very shocked’ that Newcastle United are battling against relegation this season.
Speaking after helping his new team to a 2-1 victory over West Ham, the new signing thinks the Newcastle players are far better than that.
He also praised them for making it so easy for him to fit in immediately, saying that they already know where his passes will be going.
Shown perfectly when Jonjo Shelvey’s superb diagonal pass was anticipated by Daryl Janmaat, who then crossed for Gini Wijnaldum’s winning goal.
The opening 20 to 30 minutes of the game saw Newcastle threatening to blow West Ham away and a 2-0 lead was scant reward for their dominance.
West Ham came back into the game in the second half as predictably Newcastle couldn’t keep that first half pace up for the entire 90 minutes, but they just about did enough to see out the game.
More of the same please!
“I’m very shocked that this team is in around it (relegation zone), considering the players that are in the dressing room.
“It is a pleasure to play with them, they know where you are passing.
“Normally it is hard coming into a new team and slotting in straight away – but I felt straight at home.
“I think that is credit to the players and the staff that they have got here.”
