Ian Wright flags up Gini Wijnaldum ‘problem’ at Newcastle
Ian Wright has been talking about Gini Wijnaldum’s opening six months at Newcastle United.
The striker turned pundit identifying a ‘problem’ with the former PSV midfielder’s contribution so far.
Whilst Ian Wright thinks he has been a great success, he wonders why Wijnaldum hasn’t scored a single goal away from home.
Wright questions whether he is missing loads of chances on the road and whether he is getting into the box in away games as much as matches at St James Park.
Apart from maybe the Arsenal match, I can’t remember Wijnaldum having many clear-cut chances away from home and to be honest, I think he has been one of the main victims of Steve McClaren’s negative formations.
No surprise that when McClaren has gone with a more positive mindset such as against West Ham, the likes of Wijnaldum look so much better as he can express himself better with more space in an attacking formation.
Likewise games such as at home to Norwich and Manchester United when the players, under McClaren’s orders or not…then went on the offensive after falling behind.
Hopefully home AND away McClaren and his team will be using attack as the best way of getting out of trouble.
Newcastle have scored only 5 goals away from home and indeed the total of 19 at home is a little misleading, if you take out the 9 goals scored against Norwich and Manchester United.
Indeed in half (6 of 12) of Newcastle’s home games, United have scored only one or zero goals.
What isn’t in doubt is that without Wijnaldum’s goals, Newcastle would be in a desperate state.
His nine goals instrumental in Newcastle banking 12 of their 21 points from these games (scoring 4 v Norwich, 1 each in the others)
Newcastle 2 Southampton 2
Newcastle 2 Chelsea 2
Newcastle 6 Norwich 2
Newcastle 2 Liverpool 0
Newcastle 3 Man Utd 3
Newcastle 2 West Ham 1
Ian Wright speaking about Gini Wijnaldum in a podcast for The Sun:
“To score that many goals at home and not score away from home – is he not trying to get into the box like he does at Newcastle?
“You see him there and he is always trying to get into the box.
“Is he missing loads of chances away from home?
“Imagine if he did chip in with a few away from home as well, it is going to help them even more.
“ It’s strange that somebody is scoring that many, but none away from home, as long as he’s scoring though I’m sure Newcastle are going to be happy.”
